ABOUT WALK YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

On November 7, Sustain Charlotte and OrthoCarolina piloted a project called Walk Your Neighborhood to promote walking as a form of transportation! Using wayfinding signs, this project encourages residents of the neighborhoods surrounding the Plaza Midwood Business District to walk, rather than drive to destinations in this area. Signs tell residents how many minutes it will take them to walk to popular destinations.

We have great family-friendly activities posted that you can enjoy while walking. Click here to see them.

Through this project, we hope to raise awareness of the role that walking can play as a mode of transportation and the many social, environmental, and economic benefits walking generates for ourselves and our community!

Walkable communities provide opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to connect and engage more easily with one another and create more vibrant public spaces.  They also allow citizens the ability to safely and conveniently patronize local shops, businesses, and restaurants.  Third, they provide environmental benefits by reducing car travel and thereby harmful emissions.  Fourth, they improve residents' health by increasing physical activity.

By promoting the walkability of this area, this project will create more vibrant streets, support local businesses, highlight unique neighborhood features, create community, and strengthen inter-neighborhood connections.
